28 students and teachers in Alor Setar school suffer food poisoning

ALOR SETAR: Twenty-four pupils and four teachers of SK Iskandar here were down with food poisoning after breakfast at the school on Tuesday (Oct 22).

An ambulance and medical officers from the emergency unit of Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital were despatched to the school after the hospital received information on the incident at about 11am.

When The Star arrived at the school at noon, all the pupils were seen gathered inside a pusat sumber (resource centre) while medical officers from the hospital and district health department attended to the patients.

So far, the cause of the food poisoning is yet to be determined.

However, it is understood that the pupils and teachers had eaten fried rice with ikan bilis, water melon and a beverage between 7am and 7.30am at the school.

They developed stomach ache at about 9.30am.

The school then called the 999 emergency line.

State Health Department director Datuk Dr Norhizan Ismail confirmed the incident.

As at 1pm, all the affected Years One to Six pupils were still at the resource centre receiving treatment. -The Star
