PETALING JAYA: A total of 265 cases involving the highly infectious Covid-19 Delta variant have been detected in the past two weeks, says health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The Delta variant has a higher infectivity rate and is much more transmissible compared to the original virus which sparked the pandemic last year.

More recently, it was reported that the Delta variant is now the dominant variant in Sarawak which is seeing a rise in cases.

In a Facebook post, Noor Hisham said the latest cases bring the total number of infections involving variants of concern (VOC) and variants of interest (VOI) to 1,221.

“Of that number, 1,201 are VOC cases and 20 are VOI cases.”

On the VOCs, Noor Hisham said 978 cases involved the Delta variant, Beta (209) and Alpha (14). As for the VOIs, 13 involve the Theta variant, Kappa (4) and Eta (3).-FMT
