Almost 600,000 consumers to be affected by Penang water disruption

GEORGE TOWN: A total of 590,000 Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) customers will be affected by next month’s scheduled water supply disruption.

State infrastructure, transport and digital economy committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said this includes non-domestic users in all major industrial areas in the state.

He said among the affected areas are Seberang Perai on the mainland; and on the island, Pulau Tikus, George Town, Jelutong, Gelugor, Bukit Jambul, Relau, Bayan Lepas, Bayan Baru, Batu Maung, Teluk Kumbar and Balik Pulau.

“However, areas such as Air Itam, Tanjung Bungah, Batu Ferringhi and Teluk Bahang will not be affected as they receive water supply from the Air Itam and Teluk Bahang dams,” he told a press at Komtar on Friday (Dec 8).

It was reported earlier that the disruption would be for four days from Jan 10, to allow PBAPP to carry out immediate pipe repair work at the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant.

Zairil explained that the work involves replacing two main control valves measuring 1,200mm in the main treated water pipe within the plant, which has been leaking.

He said during the same period, various other auxiliary water projects will be carried out at 22 other locations throughout Penang.

“The scheduled water supply disruption will commence at 6am on Jan 10 and supply is expected to be fully restored by 6am on Jan 14,” he said.

He added that PBAPP apologised for the inconvenience caused, but the scheduled works are necessary to ensure the quality of future supply, as well as to reduce non-revenue water losses.
