KUALA LUMPUR: The National Film Development Corporation (Finas) views allegations by certain quarters about its “lack of seriousness” with regard to the piracy issue as damaging to its image and reputation.

In a news report yesterday, Finas chief executive officer Ahmad Idham Ahmad Nadzri denied the accusation that the corporation had not done its part wholeheartedly after the Pencil Pictures & Records-produced movie, Ada Apa Dengan Dosa, had become a victim of piracy with digital copies sold illegally on an e-commerce platform.

“Since we set up a special committee to handle the digital piracy issue, we’ve been able to stop the sale of digital and pirated movie copies online, including on e-commerce platforms such as Shopee.

“When you no longer see illegal copies being sold online, that means we’ve done our work, and effectively to boot.

“So why keep on harping on it? Don’t just ask Finas what it has done so far, but look at the results,” said Idham in response to a statement made recently by the movie’s producer Datuk Ayu Puteh.

Idham added that as Finas viewed the allegations seriously, the matter is now being reviewed by its legal department.

This is to ascertain the impact of Ayu’s statements on the body’s reputation and whether any further action is required.

At a press conference held earlier, Ayu insisted that the issue had not been resolved and she would keep on fighting for her rights, despite receiving warnings to keep quiet by a certain party she did not name.

She also insisted for the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry and Finas to take a more aggressive stance in tackling the issue of piracy.
