Five charged with human trafficking

JOHOR BARU: Five people, including two senior immigration officers, were charged at the Sessions Court here with alleged involvement in human trafficking activities.

Tengku Jajang Sagita Tengku Redzuan, 54; Razali Mohamad, 55; M. Amir Nasir, 61; Haris Fadzilah Abu Bakar, 48; and Noryati Abu Bakar, 50, pleaded not guilty to the charges when their cases were heard in five different courtrooms.

Noryati and Haris Fadzilah, who were working as the deputy director and senior immigration officer respectively at the Pasir Gudang Immigration Department office, were charged with eight counts of human trafficking.

M. Amir, a construction worker, had eight charges over the same offence.

Ticketing agent Tengku Jajang Sagita had two charges, while security guard Razali had one charge.

All five of the accused allegedly committed the offence at the Pasir Gudang Port at 12 noon on June 15.

They were charged under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007.

If convicted, they can be jailed for up to 15 years or fined, or both.

The court has set July 23 for remention of the case.
