JOHOR BARU: Police believed they have busted a syndicate selling fake International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) and employer approval letters re-used for inter-state travels.
Johor police chief Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said police arrested four suspects, including two women, aged between 16 and 20, on August 5 to assist investigation.
“The syndicate has been active since March this year. They ‘advertise’ their services through social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WeChat,” Ayob Khan told a Press conference at the state police headquarters here.
He said the syndicate would charge RM150 for each letter and each member would receive a commission of between RM50 and RM100.
“We believe about 250 letters have been sold by the syndicate,” said Ayob Khan.
At first glance, the letters appeared genuine as the syndicate used the name of a legitimate company for the fake letters.
“The owner was unaware that his company was being used for this but we believe an insider is involved. Investigations are still ongoing,” said Ayob Khan.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
He also said police were looking for Nicholas Chai Jia Han, whose last known address was 49, Jalan Bukit Kontang, Taman Ria in Tangkak to help in the investigations.-NST
