PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is ready to work with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for the well-being of Malays and Islam.

“I welcome Dr Mahathir’s statement that he is willing to cooperate with me.

“I am aware of recent political developments putting the Malays and Muslims in this country at a tough crossroads.

“As a Muslim, I am ready to cooperate with all Malay and Muslim leaders to defend religion, race and country,” the Perikatan Nasional chairman said in a statement Friday (June 2).

On Thursday (June 1), Dr Mahathir said he was ready to work with Muhyiddin if an agreement could be reached on mutual goals, which is to champion the Malay cause and reject those involved in corruption and criminal misconduct.

He claimed that Malays were currently split into many parties and have lost power, which is the reason they need to unite.

Dr Mahathir had worked with Muhyiddin when he was chairman of Bersatu, which toppled the Barisan Nasional government by joining forces with Pakatan Harapan in the 14th General Election (GE14) in 2018.

He stepped down as prime minister and Bersatu chairman after the Sheraton Move in February 2020 and was sacked from the party three months later for not supporting the Muhyiddin-led Perikatan Nasional government.

Muhyiddin resigned as prime minister in August 2021 after losing his majority in Parliament.
