PETALING JAYA: Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah is urging members of the public and corporations to be a part of the MyBaikHati crowdsourcing campaign to collect and refurbish used devices that will be distributed to B40 families.
“This crowdsourcing concept brings people and corporations together to help fellow Malaysians who are in need to get through challenging times,” he said in a statement today (March 18), adding that the initiative was conceived to ensure that low-income families needing smart devices for work or studies are not left out.
Devices accepted include smartphones, 4G-enabled tablets, Chromebooks with Windows 8 and above, and laptops, preferably with chargers intact.
Saifuddin said both members of the public and businesses can contribute to the campaign by donating their used devices to selected telco outlets.
The six telcos involved in the MyBaikHati initiative are Celcom Axiata Bhd, Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, Maxis Bhd, U Mobile Sdn Bhd, Telekom Malaysia Bhd and Time dotCom Bhd.
“The campaign to collect, refurbish and distribute used devices will be carried out over 12 months, starting in Klang Valley as the main focus location before being rolled out to the rest of the country,” he said.
He added that the telcos will refurbish the devices at a cost of up to RM500 per device.
“Devices that have been successfully refurbished will be channelled towards eligible B40 recipients from all over the country, based on a list provided by the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) under the Finance Ministry,” Saifuddin said, adding that non-functioning devices will be recycled as e-waste.
MyBaikHati was first announced by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on March 17 as part of the Pemerkasa initiative.
Digi in a press statement said those in the Klang Valley can contribute by registering their interest to donate on a campaign page and arrange for pick-up, or drop off the devices at designated collection points.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) told LifestyleTech that the MyBaikHati programme, which begins today, is a separate scheme from a previously-announced Cerdik initiative to distribute 150,000 laptops to B40 students that was unveiled in Budget 2021 last November.- The Star
