MERSING: A week-old male elephant calf was rescued after it fell into a river in Kampung Orang Asli Tanah Abang here on Monday (Sept 14).
Johor Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director Salman Saaban said villagers reported the incident at around 2pm on Monday after the calf fell into Sungai Endau near their village.
“Four Perhilitan personnel from the Mersing office went to the village and found that the villagers had managed to pull the calf out of the river.
“We believe the calf was trying to cross the river and was left behind by the herd,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (Sept 15).
According to Salman, the calf was taken to the Mersing Perhilitan office where it was thoroughly checked by a veterinarian.
The calf, which had some minor wounds from old injuries, was not severely hurt in the incident, he added.
He said the rescued calf would be transported to the National Elephant Conservation Centre in Kuala Gandah, Pahang for the necessary care and treatment soon.
“This is the second elephant calf rescued this year, with the first one rescued on July 14 after it was found roaming around by itself in Batu 7, Jalan Kota Tinggi-Mersing,” he said. -The Star.
