MIRI: A new Covid-19 case has been found here.

The new case is a man who was hospitalised at the Miri Hospital on Sunday (June 21), with the Miri Division Disaster Relief Committee confirming him on Tuesday (June 23) as Covid-19 positive.

The committee, in a press release, said the man, a Miri resident, had recently travelled overseas.

“He returned to Miri via flight from Kuala Lumpur International Airport after he came back from overseas.

“He had travelled recently to Tunisia before returning to Malaysia via KLIA and then flew back to Miri,” the committee said.

This marks a worrying development for northern Sarawak as there have been eight cases at the Bintulu hospital in the past few days.

A state assemblyman is calling for immediate reinstatement of inter-district travel restrictions in northern Sarawak.

Tanjung Batu representative Chiew Ching Sing said the new Bintulu cases were from villages close to Bintulu town.

He said the police must set up roadblocks without delay and stop free-flow travel.

The recent new cases in Bintulu are related to a student who tested positive for Covid-19 on June 14. Efforts are ongoing to trace all close contacts and relatives of these positive patients.

Chiew, whose constituency covers part of the town centre, said people in Bintulu town and its outskirts must exercise caution.

Sarawak has 560-plus positive cases so far and 17 deaths.
