A MASTERPLAN is being drawn for Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) to go beyond education.

The plan will see greater collaborations with industry, said its board of governors chairman Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

TAR UC, he said, was on its way to becoming a full-fledged university “very soon” so a plan for the next 10 to 50 years, must be in place.

He said TAR UC, which has trained over 200,000 students, would complement – not compete with – Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR).

“UTAR will be more academic while TAR UC will focus on going beyond education to work with industry.

“In the early years, we focused on providing quality, affordable education.

“But we have to keep upgrading so we’re going to hold a forum to get input on the way forward, ” he said during the Federation of Tunku Abdul Rahman College Alumni Associations Malaysia’s 31st anniversary luncheon.

The event was held in Petaling Jaya on Feb 29.

In his speech, TAR UC president Prof Dr Lee Sze Wei called on all alumni to share their views on the masterplan.

“We’re already running like a university.

“We want to be relevant and contribute to nation building.

“So if you need interns or solutions in your factories, come talk to us, ” he said, adding that TAR UC’s employment rate was 90% within the first six months of graduation.

Alumni Federation president Adrian Yeo said a book on TAR UC’s history was in the works.

The final instalment of a three-part series will be ready in June, he said, adding that the alumni has plenty of knowledge and ideas to share.

“We want to make sure that the story of TAR UC is documented.” – The Star
