GEORGE TOWN, — Two graduates of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) became the university’s double degree programme pioneers at its 57th convocation today.

D. Selwa Raw, 24, received a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications and a Bachelor’s Degree in Science, while Tan Aik Sian, 23, was awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in Science and and Bachelor’s Degree in Management.

The double degree programme offered by the School of Distance Education (SDE) is for full-time students who are in second year and above.

Met by reporters after the convocation, Selwa Raw said he first studied for a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications (Honours), majoring in Film and Broadcasting and then registered for the double degree programme for a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Biology.

“I am a Science student, but at the same time am interested in communications. When I got the offer to study communications at USM, I accepted it although my heart was against it, because what I really wanted was to study science.

“I got to know about the double degree programme when I was in second year; it was an opportunity to pursue my interest to study science,” he told Bernama.
