RM33mil worth of drugs seized in just two months this year

GEORGE TOWN: The state Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department seized an assortment of drugs worth about RM33 million in just two months of this year.

State police chief Datuk Sahabudin Abd Manan said the seizure was high compared to the overall drug seizure of RM43.7 million for the whole of last year.

Aside from the seized drugs, he said, police also nabbed 1,271 people to assist in their probes through numerous big scale operations in the first two months of this year.

He said for the whole of last year, they had arrested 8,633 people in connection with 6,574 cases.

“Based on statistics, last year’s arrests made under Section 39C of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 involved 356 people, with 185 being prosecuted, way above our target,” he said at the 214th Police Day at the state police contingent headquarters here today.

Sahabudin also said the state police had detained 34 people, including Chinese nationals, for their alleged involvement in non-existent investment schemes, account mule syndicates and fake forecast number schemes last year.

“A total of 2,456 such cases were reported and investigation papers were opened involving losses to the tune of RM181 million,” he added.

On the issue of integrity, Sahabudin said there would be no compromise on the matter as well as on compliance standard involving his men for any alleged wrongdoings.

For the whole of last year, 40 complaints had been received from the public against officers and personnel, all of which are being probed for disciplinary issues.-NST
