SEGAMAT, 20 September 2026 (The Capital Post) – Malaysia is expanding the role of rural libraries beyond reading spaces into community hubs for knowledge, literacy and lifelong learning.
The initiative was highlighted through the Tekad Komuniti, Semarak Perpaduan (TKSP) 2026 programme organised by the National Unity Ministry through the National Library of Malaysia (PNM) in Segamat, Johor, on Saturday (19 September).
Deputy National Unity Minister YB Tuan Yuneswaran Ramaraj officiated the programme, which combines literacy, heritage, arts, culture and lifelong learning activities.
The programme aims to bring rural libraries closer to local communities through a more inclusive approach while promoting greater understanding of local history, culture and heritage.

Among its key initiatives is the PNM Rural Library Reading Class (KECA), which equips rural library personnel with skills to help children develop an interest in reading and improve their literacy from an early age.
Library personnel are also trained to conduct reading activities and use a variety of reading materials to make learning more engaging and effective.
According to a post on the official Facebook page of the National Unity Ministry, the initiative seeks to strengthen rural libraries as spaces that support literacy, community interaction and unity among Malaysians from diverse backgrounds. – The Capital Post
