PETALING JAYA 11 March 2026 (The Capital Post)- It may sound unusual, but there has indeed been an athlete who achieved the rare feat of winning both an Olympic gold medal and an Academy Award.
The individual is late basketball legend Kobe Bryant, who secured two gold medals with the United States men’s basketball team at the Olympic Games in 2008 and 2012.
Bryant later made history in the entertainment industry when he won an Oscar at the Academy Awards in 2018 for the animated short film Dear Basketball. The film was based on a poem he wrote announcing his retirement from professional basketball.
The animated short, narrated by Bryant himself, reflects on his lifelong love for the sport and the journey that shaped his career. It won the award for Best Animated Short Film during the ceremony.
Bryant’s achievement placed him among a very small group of individuals who have excelled at the highest level in both sports and the arts, highlighting his influence beyond basketball.
The milestone remains a unique example of how athletes can successfully transition into creative fields after their sporting careers.-The Capital Post
