VIENNA, 16 September 2026 (The Capital Post) – Malaysia is participating in the 70th International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna as member states discuss the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology, including nuclear energy for electricity generation.
The conference opened on Monday (14 September) and will continue until 18 September, bringing together IAEA member states and 36 ministers from various countries.
Malaysia’s delegation is led by Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA) Secretary-General YBhg. Dato’ Sri Haji Mad Zaidi bin Mohd Karli.
He is joined by Malaysia’s Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to the IAEA, H.E. YBhg. Dato’ Fenny Nuli, officials from the Malaysian mission in Vienna and representatives from PETRA, the Malaysian Nuclear Agency, the Department of Atomic Energy and MyPOWER.
The annual conference serves as a key policymaking forum for member states to discuss matters involving the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology.

The IAEA currently has 182 member states, with Timor-Leste joining as its newest member. Malaysia has been a member of the agency since 1969.
The 70th General Conference is chaired by Ambassador Gustavo Rodolfo Zlauvinen, Argentina’s Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to the IAEA, who was elected president of this year’s conference.
Mad Zaidi is also scheduled to deliver Malaysia’s national statement during the conference.
According to a post on the official Facebook page of the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry, Malaysia’s delegation is participating in the conference alongside representatives from key national agencies involved in the country’s energy and nuclear sectors. – The Capital Post
