WASHINGTON 2 April 2026 (The Capital Post) – More than 200 advocacy organisations and child development experts have urged YouTube to take stronger action to protect young users from a growing wave of low-quality artificial intelligence-generated videos commonly referred to as “AI slop.”

The appeal was made in a formal letter addressed to YouTube Chief Executive Neal Mohan and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, where campaigners expressed concern about the rapid spread of such content across both the main YouTube platform and YouTube Kids. According to the groups, these videos are often produced in large volumes using generative AI tools and are designed primarily to attract views rather than provide meaningful educational value.

Child welfare advocates warned that the videos could negatively affect children’s development by distorting their understanding of reality and overwhelming their learning processes. They argue the content can also capture children’s attention for extended periods, potentially replacing healthy activities such as sleep, play and social interaction.

The coalition has proposed several measures to address the issue, including requiring clear labels for all AI-generated content, preventing such videos from appearing on YouTube Kids, and restricting algorithmic recommendations of AI-produced material to users under the age of 18. They also called for parental controls that would allow families to block AI-generated content entirely.

The campaign comes amid broader scrutiny of technology companies and their role in shaping online experiences for children. Critics say platforms should do more to ensure that automated recommendation systems do not amplify questionable or repetitive content that targets young audiences.

YouTube has previously acknowledged the issue, stating that addressing the rise of “AI slop” and reducing the spread of repetitive or low-quality material will be among its priorities as it strengthens measures against spam and misleading content across the platform.-The Capital Post
