JOHOR BAHRU, 2 June 2026 (The Capital Post) – Johor is set for a fresh state election after the state legislative assembly was officially dissolved, paving the way for voters to return to the polls in what is expected to be a closely watched political test ahead of Malaysia’s next general election.
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced that the dissolution took effect on June 1 after receiving the consent of Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim. The move comes nearly a year before the assembly’s term was due to expire in April 2027, triggering a state election that must be held within 60 days under Malaysian electoral laws.
The Election Commission is expected to convene soon to determine key dates, including nomination day, early voting and polling day. Political parties have already begun preparations as attention turns to one of the country’s most economically significant states.
Johor’s upcoming election is widely viewed as an important indicator of voter sentiment ahead of the 16th General Election, which must be held by 2028. The state has long been regarded as a political stronghold for Barisan Nasional (BN) and holds strategic importance due to its economic ties with Singapore and ongoing development initiatives linked to the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone.
In the last state election in March 2022, BN secured a commanding two-thirds majority by winning 40 of the 56 seats in the Johor State Legislative Assembly. Pakatan Harapan (PH) won 12 seats, while Perikatan Nasional (PN) secured three seats and the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) captured one seat.

Political observers expect the upcoming contest to feature intense competition among BN, PH and PN, with all major coalitions signalling their intention to contest across the state. The election is also expected to test the strength of political cooperation arrangements that have emerged at the federal level since the formation of the unity government.
Onn Hafiz said the dissolution was carried out to ensure Johor continues to enjoy a stable and effective administration while allowing the democratic process to proceed. He also called on political parties and supporters to conduct their campaigns responsibly and preserve harmony throughout the election period.
With Johor positioned as a major investment and industrial hub, the election outcome will be closely monitored by businesses, investors and political analysts alike, as it may offer an early glimpse into the national political landscape heading into the next general election cycle. – The Capital Post.
