Johor school closed after student tests positive for Covid-19

JOHOR BARU: SK Taman Desa Skudai here has been closed for eight days starting Friday (Oct 16) after one of its students tested positive for Covid-19.

Checks at the school found a notice has been issued by the Johor Education Department stating that the school will be closed from Oct 16-23.

The notice placed at the school’s main gate added that students are allowed to return to their school on Oct 25.

It is learnt that the order was issued at around 9.45am on Friday to allow the authorities to conduct sanitation and screening tests on students after a Year Three student tested positive for Covid-19.

Students who had gone through the screening tests were seen wearing pink bracelets and have been told to self-quarantine for 14 days.

It is also learnt that some 70 individuals are known to have been in close contact with the infected student, comprising his schoolmates and students from the nearby Sekolah Agama Tafrijiyyah Taman Universiti.

Johor Education, Information, Heritage and Culture Committee chairman Mazlan Bujang and state Education Department director Shaharuddin Saari declined to confirm the matter.

On Thursday (Oct 15), a viral WhatsApp message said that a student had tested positive for Covid-19 after his relatives from Selangor paid him a visit on Oct 5.

The Health Ministry informed the student’s family after one of their relatives also tested positive for Covid-19.

They had been ordered to self-quarantine at their own home in Skudai from Oct 8-19 before the student was confirmed to have tested positive on Thursday (Oct 15) afternoon. -The Star
