KPM promotes reading culture, launches 100-year textbook book

PUTRAJAYA, 21 August 2026 (The Capital Post) – The Ministry of Education (KPM) is continuing efforts to promote a strong reading culture among students through the National NILAM Icon Award 2026 and the launch of a book documenting 100 years of textbooks in Malaysia.

The National Education Director-General, Datuk Dr. Mohd. Azam bin Ahmad, officiated the National NILAM Icon Award 2026 ceremony on 20 August.

The award recognises students who are not only active readers but are also able to understand, evaluate and expand their knowledge through creativity and knowledge-sharing.

Four main recognitions were presented under the award, namely Pengkarya Muda, Video TV PSS, Pembaca Bestari and Bicara Buku.

At the same ceremony, Mohd. Azam also launched the Buku 100 Tahun Buku Teks Kementerian Pendidikan, which documents the evolution of textbooks in Malaysia over the past century as part of the country’s educational heritage.

The initiative highlights KPM’s efforts to nurture reading habits while preserving important milestones in the development of Malaysia’s education system.

According to a post on the official Facebook page of Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia, the programme reflects the ministry’s efforts to strengthen reading and knowledge-sharing among students. – The Capital Post
