SINGAPORE, June 2, 2026 (The Capital Post) – According to a statement shared on the official Facebook page of Kementerian Pertahanan Malaysia, Malaysia and New Zealand have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral defence ties during a meeting between Malaysia’s Defence Minister and New Zealand’s Defence Minister, Chris Penk, on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue 2026.
The discussion focused on enhancing Malaysia-New Zealand defence cooperation, including collaboration under the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA), military training initiatives, defence diplomacy and regional security developments.
Both sides also exchanged views on the importance of developing more resilient defence industries by leveraging emerging technologies and innovation while reducing dependence on external supply chains to strengthen national preparedness and defence capabilities.
In addition, the ministers discussed current global security challenges, including the impact of conflicts in the Middle East on the global economy and energy supply chains.

Malaysia emphasised the importance of continued efforts to de-escalate conflicts and maintain peace in order to safeguard global stability and prosperity.
