PUTRAJAYA, 9 March 2026 (The Capital Post) — The sighting of the Syawal new moon to determine the date of Hari Raya Aidilfitri will take place at 29 locations across Malaysia on March 19.
The Office of the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal announced that the process will be conducted nationwide, with the official date for Aidilfitri to be declared later that evening via radio and television broadcasts.
According to the statement, the determination of Aidilfitri follows the methods approved by the Conference of Rulers, combining rukyah (actual sighting of the new moon) and hisab (astronomical calculations).
Observation will be carried out at various designated locations including Baitul Hilal Bangunan Sultan Ismail in Pontian, Johor; Kompleks Falak Al-Khawarizmi in Melaka; Baitul Hilal Telok Kemang in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan; and several sites in Selangor such as Bukit Melawati, Bukit Jugra and Balai Cerap Selangor in Sabak Bernam.

Other observation points include facilities in Perak, Penang, Kedah, Terengganu, Kelantan, Sarawak, Sabah, Pahang, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Perlis, among others.
The nationwide moon sighting exercise is conducted annually to determine the start of Syawal, marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan and the beginning of the Aidilfitri celebrations for Muslims in Malaysia.—The Capital Post
