HELSINKI 8 April 2026 (The Capital Post) – TikTok plans to invest €1 billion (US$1.16 billion) to develop a second data centre in Finland as part of its broader strategy to strengthen data protection for European users and localise data storage within the region.

The new facility will be located in Lahti, southern Finland, with an initial capacity of 50 megawatts and the potential to expand to 128 megawatts, reflecting the company’s long-term commitment to digital infrastructure in Europe.

This latest investment comes less than a year after TikTok unveiled plans for its first Finnish data centre, which is expected to become operational by the end of 2026, while the second facility is targeted for completion in 2027.

The expansion forms part of TikTok’s €12 billion European data sovereignty initiative, aimed at enhancing security measures for more than 200 million users across the continent amid increasing regulatory scrutiny over data privacy.

Finland has emerged as a preferred destination for large-scale data centres due to its cold climate, access to low-cost and low-carbon energy, and stable regulatory environment, attracting global technology players seeking efficient and sustainable operations.

However, the company’s growing presence in the country has also raised concerns among some Finnish policymakers over transparency and potential security implications, particularly following earlier criticism surrounding its first project.

TikTok said European user data is currently stored across facilities in Norway, Ireland and the United States, with the new investments aimed at further consolidating storage within Europe and addressing regulatory expectations.

The move underscores TikTok’s ongoing efforts to reinforce trust and compliance in key markets while expanding its global infrastructure footprint. -The Capital Post
