LONDON 8 April 2026 (The Capital Post) – The United Kingdom has raised alarm over a cyber espionage campaign linked to Russia, in which hackers are reportedly hijacking home and office routers to intercept sensitive data, including passwords.
According to British authorities, the operation involves compromising internet-connected devices to gain persistent access, allowing attackers to monitor network traffic and capture login credentials from unsuspecting users.
The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) said the activity is part of a broader effort targeting organisations and individuals, with hackers exploiting vulnerabilities in outdated or poorly secured networking equipment.
Officials warned that once routers are compromised, attackers can silently redirect or observe internet traffic, posing significant risks to both personal privacy and organisational security.

The campaign is believed to be associated with a Russia-linked hacking group known for conducting long-term cyber espionage operations against Western interests.
Authorities have urged users and businesses to update router firmware, change default passwords and implement stronger security measures to reduce exposure to such threats.
The warning highlights growing concerns over state-backed cyber activities and the increasing use of everyday digital infrastructure as entry points for sophisticated attacks. -The Capital Post
