KUCHING, 17 September 2026 (The Capital Post) – Some 6,000 guests gathered at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Wednesday (16 September) for the Malaysia Day 2026 celebration, showcasing the country’s cultural diversity and spirit of unity.
The celebration was officiated symbolically before Sarawak Governor TYT Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar led a pulut kuning cutting ceremony.
He was accompanied by Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim; Sarawak Premier YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr.) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg; and Sabah Chief Minister YAB Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji bin Haji Noor.
The programme opened with the “Segulai Sejalai” welcoming dance, highlighting Sarawak’s cultural diversity while promoting unity, harmony and togetherness.
The event also featured the signing of a special Malaysia Day 2026 commemorative book.
A musical theatre performance titled “Malaysiaku MADANI, Kesejahteraan Dinikmati”, reflecting this year’s National Day and Malaysia Day theme, was among the highlights.
The “Serumpun MADANI” dance performance showcased cultural heritage from Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, reinforcing the celebration’s focus on Malaysia’s diversity and unity.

Popular Malaysian artistes Faizal Tahir, Dayang Nurfaizah and Stacy also performed before the celebration concluded with a fireworks display at the Kuching Waterfront.
Separately, a Malaysia Day 2026 exhibition themed around the “Corridor of Malaysia’s Formation” was held at Plaza Merdeka, highlighting the historical journey that brought together Sarawak, Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia in the formation of Malaysia.
Communications Minister and Malaysia National Day and Malaysia Day (HKHM) 2026 Main Committee Chairman YB Dato’ Seri Fahmi Fadzil was also present.
Other attendees included Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister and Sarawak Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister YB Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who served as Malaysia Day 2026 Co-Chairman, along with federal, Sarawak and Sabah ministers.
