KUALA LUMPUR 21 April 2026 (The Capital Post) – The Home Ministry has signed a contract with a Turkish shipyard for the construction of a second Multi-Purpose Mission Ship (MPMS), aimed at strengthening Malaysia’s maritime enforcement capabilities.

The agreement was awarded to Desan Shipyard in Türkiye, with the vessel expected to be completed within a 24-month period, running from February 2026 to January 2028, according to officials present at the signing ceremony.

The MPMS is part of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency’s (MMEA) long-term fleet expansion plan to enhance patrol, surveillance, and search-and-rescue operations across Malaysia’s vast maritime zones.

The 99-metre vessel is designed for multi-role missions, including enforcement at sea, anti-smuggling operations, and humanitarian support, with the capability to remain operational for extended periods without resupply.

It will also feature advanced operational facilities such as a helicopter deck, fast interceptor boats, detention spaces, and medical facilities, allowing it to function as a “mothership” for extended maritime missions.

Authorities said the acquisition is crucial as Malaysia’s maritime area covers a large operational zone, requiring stronger assets to address rising security challenges such as smuggling and illegal activities at sea.

The second MPMS is identical in design to the first vessel currently under construction, with additional enhancements in technology and mission capability to improve operational flexibility.

Officials added that the project reflects continued defence and maritime cooperation between Malaysia and Türkiye, particularly in the development of modern naval assets.-The Capital Post
