Over 1,900 Displaced After Massive Sandakan Fire, Eight Relief Centres Activated

KOTA KINABALU 22 April 2026 (The Capital Post) – A total of 1,912 individuals from 385 families affected by a devastating fire in Kampung Bahagia, Sandakan, are currently being sheltered across eight temporary evacuation centres as of Wednesday morning.

According to the Sabah Disaster Management Committee Secretariat, the victims have been placed in several relief locations established immediately after the incident, including community halls and schools in Batu Sapi, Sibuga and Karamunting, which were opened on the day of the disaster.

Authorities later expanded capacity by opening two additional centres the following day, bringing the total number of evacuation facilities to eight as the number of registered victims continued to rise.

Despite the scale of the incident, officials confirmed that no fatalities were recorded.

The fire, which broke out on April 19, tore through the water village settlement in Kampung Bahagia, destroying an estimated 1,000 homes and affecting an area exceeding four hectares.

The disaster has left thousands displaced, prompting ongoing relief efforts and coordination among local authorities to provide shelter and essential assistance to those impacted.-The Capital Post
