PASAY CITY, Philippines, 5 June 2026 (The Capital Post) – Malaysia has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting and empowering older persons through its participation in the ASEAN High-Level Forum on Unlocking the Silver Economy, held from 3 to 4 June 2026 in Pasay City, Philippines.
The forum, organised by the Philippines’ Senior Officials Meeting on Social Welfare and Development (SOMSWD) in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), brought together policymakers, private sector leaders, civil society representatives and academic experts to strengthen regional cooperation on ageing-related issues and develop the ASEAN Framework on Unlocking the Silver Economy.
Malaysia’s delegation was led by Deputy Secretary-General (Strategic) of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM), Mohd Daud Mohd Arif, who represented Malaysia’s SOMSWD. Also participating were representatives from the Ministry of Health Malaysia, Ministry of Human Resources and KPWKM’s Policy and Strategic Planning Division.
During the technical discussions to validate the ASEAN Framework on Unlocking the Silver Economy, Malaysia expressed its full support for the proposed framework and highlighted the importance of collaboration among ASEAN sectoral bodies, particularly SOMSWD, the Senior Officials Meeting on Health Development (SOMHD) and the Senior Labour Officials Meeting (SLOM).
Malaysia also proposed the inclusion of measures to protect older persons from cyber threats and online scams, reflecting growing concerns over digital security as technology adoption continues to expand across the ASEAN region.
