SEGAMAT, July 24, 2026 (The Capital Post) – The Malaysia Techlympics 2026 Southern Zone competition officially opened its doors, bringing together thousands of young participants to showcase their creativity and innovation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The two-day event held at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), Segamat, Johor, was officiated by Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (MOSTI) Secretary-General Dato’ Ts. Dr. Nagulendran Kangayatkarasu.
The Southern Zone competition served as the qualifying round for participants from Johor and Melaka, with around 2,300 participants representing 135 schools and higher education institutions (IPTs) competing for places in the National Finals scheduled for November 2026 at MAEPS, Serdang, Selangor.
In his speech, Dato’ Ts. Dr. Nagulendran highlighted that Malaysia Techlympics aims to cultivate interest in science, technology and innovation through hands-on activities, experiential learning and informal competitions involving students and youths from diverse backgrounds.
This year’s competition also places emphasis on emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), coding, computing and drone technology. MOSTI introduced two new AI-based competitions, namely AI Vibe Coding Droneand the FC-1 Vibe AI Challenge, to provide early exposure to future technologies.

During the event, the MOSTI Secretary-General also visited exhibition booths to observe various projects and innovations presented by participants throughout the competition.
Also present was MOSTI Deputy Secretary-General (Science Planning and Culture) Dato’ Ruziah Shafei, along with other invited guests.
