BANGKOK, 24 August 2026 (The Capital Post) – Malaysia has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ASEAN cooperation in labour and workforce development through the 22nd Senior Labour Officials Meeting (SLOM) held in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Malaysian delegation was led by Deputy Secretary-General (Policy and International), Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA), YBrs. Dr. Haji Mohd Shaharin bin Umar.
The meeting, themed “Advancing ASEAN Human Capital: Skills Certification towards Global Recognition”, focused on strengthening human capital development, skills and recognition of workforce competencies across the ASEAN region.
Dr. Haji Mohd Shaharin shared Malaysia’s initiatives and experience in labour-related matters, including the ASEAN Green Jobs Forum (AGJF) held in 2025 and the outcomes of the ASEAN Year of Skills (AYOS) 2025.
He also highlighted the ASEAN Labour Inspection Conference and the fifth ALICOM Meeting held during Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, reflecting the country’s commitment to strengthening regional cooperation in labour inspection, skills development and the future of work.

Malaysia’s participation in the 22nd SLOM also provided an avenue for ASEAN member states to share best practices, exchange views and strengthen coordination on labour policies, particularly in addressing technological changes, emerging skills requirements and developments in the global employment landscape.
Malaysia remains committed to strengthening ASEAN labour cooperation through expertise-sharing, capacity building and policy coordination to support the development of a highly skilled, competitive, inclusive and future-ready ASEAN workforce.
