VIENNA, 17 September 2026 (The Capital Post) – Malaysia is evaluating nuclear energy as a potential clean electricity source under its National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) 2050 as the country seeks to strengthen energy security and supply reliability.
Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA) Secretary-General YBhg. Dato’ Sri Haji Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli outlined Malaysia’s position when delivering the country’s national statement at the 70th International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna, Austria, on Wednesday (16 September).
Malaysia is currently in Phase 1 of the IAEA Milestones Approach, the initial stage of assessing the country’s needs, readiness and capabilities across all 19 nuclear power infrastructure issues.
The assessment will provide a basis for the government to make a final decision on the development of a nuclear power plant for electricity generation.
Malaysia is also preparing for a Phase 1 Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) mission.

In its national statement, Malaysia also emphasised the importance of nuclear safety, security and safeguards, as well as technical cooperation and the peaceful use of nuclear technology.
Potential peaceful applications highlighted include food security, sustainable agriculture and water resource management.
According to a post on the official Facebook page of the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry, Malaysia’s nuclear energy assessment is being undertaken in line with its NETR 2050 aspirations while maintaining emphasis on safety, security and peaceful applications of nuclear technology. – The Capital Post
