TAMBUNAN: Perikatan Nasional remains intact despite claims that some of its MPs had switched sides to join Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s camp, says Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.

The Perikatan secretary-general said Anwar’s claim was nothing but a gimmick he tended to pull in the month of September.

“Maybe he has the same dream every September, so he imagines things and creates stories,” he said after a ceramah in Tambunan for the Sabah state election on Friday (Sept 25).

Hamzah said this in reference to Anwar’s claim this week that he had majority support to be prime minister, as well as similar claims in September 2008.

The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) secretary-general said there was no reason to question the loyalty of Bersatu members as they were all working with their president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He also said other members in Perikatan, including Umno and PAS, were doubtful of Anwar’s claims.

“We have many coalition partners, and many of them deny being with Anwar, which shows that this is a gimmick,” Hamzah said.

He added that many of those said to be in Anwar’s so-called list said their names were not supposed to be on it.

“Even PAS said no when we checked with them, and they are seeking clarification because if it’s true that some Umno members are joining Anwar, they will leave Muafakat Nasional,” he said.

Hamzah also said people should stop speculating that Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s absence at a ceramah in Petagas on Thursday (Sept 24) was a sign that trouble was brewing in Barisan Nasional.

“He is under self-quarantine, and I take this positively. It shows that he cares for his colleagues’ well-being,” he said.

Hamzah added that if the Umno president had retracted his support for Perikatan, he would not have allowed leaders like Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah deputy president Arthur Joseph Kurup to campaign in Sabah.

“All he had to do was call them and tell them to not speak at the ceramah,” he said. -The Star.
