NEW CHANDIGARH 1 April 2026 (The Capital Post) – Australian all‑rounder Cooper Connolly delivered a standout performance on his Indian Premier League debut, steering the Punjab Kings to a tense three‑wicket victory over the Gujarat Titans in their season opener on Tuesday night.
Connolly, 22, produced an unbeaten 72‑run innings off 44 deliveries that proved pivotal in guiding Punjab through a challenging chase of 163 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Stadium. His composed knock featured aggressive stroke‑making and strategic play that helped stabilise the innings after early setbacks.
Assigned to bat at number three, the young Aussie demonstrated maturity under pressure as wickets fell around him, forming crucial partnerships that kept the target within reach. With five sixes and five fours in his tally, Connolly anchored the run chase and ensured the Kings crossed the finish line with five balls to spare.
The match saw Gujarat set a competitive total of 162 for six, thanks in part to resistances from batsmen such as Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler. However, the Titans’ bowling attack ultimately struggled to contain Connolly’s timely hitting as he eased his side toward victory.
