Deputy Health Minister attends Asia-Pacific public health symposium

JOHOR BAHRU, 7 July 2026 (The Capital Post) – Deputy Health Minister Datuk Hajjah Hanifah Hajar Taib attended a symposium held in conjunction with the 9th Asia-Pacific Conference on Public Health 2026 (APCPH 2026) at DoubleTree by Hilton Johor Bahru.

The 90-minute symposium focused on planetary health, climate resilience and public health, bringing together public health experts from Malaysia and abroad to discuss the growing impact of climate change on public health and strategies to build more resilient healthcare systems.

Discussions also highlighted the importance of integrating climate and environmental considerations into healthcare planning, governance and service delivery to ensure sustainable and resilient health systems capable of protecting communities from future climate-related health threats.

The symposium featured presentations by Dr Zulhizam Abdullah, Director of the Public Health Development Division, Ministry of Health; Dr Thahiratul Asma’ Zakaria, Deputy Director (Non-Communicable Diseases), Disease Control Division, Ministry of Health; and Dr Bala Murali Sundram, Senior Medical Lecturer at the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya.

The ministry said Hanifah’s participation reflected the Ministry of Health’s continued commitment to strengthening Malaysia’s public health agenda at both the national and international levels.

Also present were Deputy Director-General of Health (Public Health) Dr Ismuni Bohari and National Centre of Excellence for Mental Health (NCEMH) Director Dr Nurashikin Ibrahim.

According to a post on the official Facebook page of KEMENTERIAN KESIHATAN MALAYSIA, the symposium underscored the ministry’s support for regional collaboration in addressing climate-related public health challenges and building resilient healthcare systems. – The Capital Post
