Malaysia, Singapore Strengthen Strategic Cooperation Through Bilateral Meeting

KUALA LUMPUR, 8 May 2026 (The Capital Post) — Malaysia and Singapore have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and expanding strategic cooperation following a meeting between Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, and Prime Minister of Singapore, Lawrence Wong.

According to information shared on the official Facebook page of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the bilateral discussion opened opportunities for both nations to further enhance cooperation aimed at safeguarding mutual interests, regional stability, and the prosperity of the people of Malaysia and Singapore.

Among the key matters discussed was the acceleration of the implementation of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), which is expected to strengthen economic connectivity and investment opportunities between the two neighbouring countries.

Both leaders also stressed the importance of ensuring that the Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS Link) project becomes operational by the end of 2026 to improve cross-border mobility and economic integration.

The meeting further highlighted efforts to expand cooperation in renewable energy initiatives and the ASEAN Power Grid, alongside deeper collaboration in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology as part of regional sustainability and climate action goals.

Malaysia also emphasised the importance of continuing maritime border negotiations constructively and in accordance with international law, while ensuring that matters involving water supply, airspace, and the management of the Kuala Lumpur Flight Information Region (KL FIR) are addressed through mutual respect and bilateral understanding.

On regional and international developments, Malaysia reiterated the importance of achieving a lasting ceasefire in the Middle East, safeguarding freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and ensuring that ASEAN continues to play a principled role in maintaining regional stability, security, and global sustainability.
