JOHOR BARU: The police here are collaborating with the Education Department and Bank Negara to address scam cases, as over 3,000 have been recorded in the state thus far this year.

State police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said the police’s Commercial Crime Department is working closely with other government agencies and private bodies to deal with scam cases.
He added that the Johor Commercial Crime Department recorded 3,185 cases from January until September this year compared to 2,403 cases in the same period in 2022.
“This shows a 782-case or 32.5% increase. From the 3,185 cases we recorded this year, online scams are the biggest contributor to this at 2,614 cases or 82.1% of the total,” said Comm Kamarul Zaman.
“Among the cases that have been categorised as online scams are online purchases, phone scams, non-existing investments and employment offers,” he said in a speech at the Johor police’s monthly assembly held at the state police headquarters here on Monday (Oct 2).

Comm Kamarul Zaman said the police would continuously carry out face-to-face and online awareness campaigns to educate the public.
“At the same time, we are also collaborating with other government agencies and private bodies such as the Johor Education Department and Bank Negara in an effort to educate the public to be more aware of crimes involving scammers,” he added.
