MELBOURNE, 4 March 2026 (The Capital Post)— McLaren driver Oscar Piastri has tempered expectations of scoring his first home victory at this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix, saying his team is not the dominant force it once was and that a breakthrough win remains far from certain.

The 24-year-old Australian, who has enjoyed strong results including seven victories and a third-place finish in the 2025 Formula One Drivers’ Championship, told reporters in Melbourne that while he is buoyed by the local support, he and McLaren are focused on measured progress rather than assuming victory at Albert Park.

Piastri’s comments come amid heightened anticipation from fans eager to see a home-grown driver win the race, a feat no Australian has achieved since the event became part of the F1 calendar in 1985. Despite that optimism, Piastri stressed that McLaren’s performance this season does not guarantee such a result and that rivals including Mercedes and Ferrari remain competitive.

The driver also downplayed extra pressure from competing in front of his home crowd and instead emphasised his team’s commitment to extracting consistent results as the season unfolds. –The Capital Post
