PUTRAJAYA: Some employees of the National Registration Department are being investigated over allegations that they wanted payments to issue certain documents, the Prime Minister has revealed.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he was recently informed of the matter.

He said these documents involved citizenship, among others, and payments were “imposed” for eligible persons to obtain the certificates.

“There must be stern action or it will ruin the image of the whole administration,” he said at the Prime Minister’s Department monthly assembly here on Monday (July 3).

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had said earlier it would investigate allegations of corruption at KLIA involving the Immigration Department.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said he had to step in to help an employee of a China-based media company after Immigration officers held her back at KLIA upon her arrival from Shenzhen on Thursday (June 29).

The woman had claimed that although her travel documents were in order, she was denied entry by the officers.

She alleged that she was asked to pay several thousand ringgit if she wanted to enter the country.
