Bukit Mertajam 24 April 2026 (The Capital Post) – Firefighters took more than 10 hours to fully extinguish a blaze at a recycling plant in the Permatang Tinggi Industrial Area, following a prolonged operation that stretched into the early hours of Friday.

Authorities said the Penang Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at approximately 1.54pm on April 23, prompting an immediate response from the Bukit Mertajam fire station. Upon arrival, crews found a large pile of paper waste and cardboard engulfed in flames within an open factory space covering about 3,700 square metres.

The fire was brought under control by mid-afternoon and extinguished shortly after, but operations continued late into the night to ensure that no remaining hotspots could reignite the blaze. The mission was only concluded at around 12.04am after thorough overhaul work was completed.

Officials reported that about 80% of the affected area was damaged in the incident, though no injuries or fatalities were recorded among workers at the site.
