PETALING JAYA: From the airport to the hotel, a red carpet will be rolled out for Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed’s RM500bil investor, says Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister said that if the claim made by the former prime minister was true, the investor would be greeted with such grand gestures.
The former prime minister on Saturday (July 8) told Malay-language daily Sinar Harian that an investor was interested in investing RM500bil in Langkawi, Kedah.
However, the daily had also issued a correction on Tuesday (July 11), saying that the figure was actually RM500mil.
“Do you know that the highest amount of investments the country has ever achieved was RM309bil in a year.
“Since our independence until now, we never had an investment of RM500bil, even during the time of Tun Dr Mahathir,” Tengku Zafrul said in a video posted on his social media on Tuesday (July 11).
Tengku Zafrul said even the RM309bil was from various sources and not a single investor.
“If it’s true that there is an investor who is looking to invest RM500bil in Langkawi alone, it would be a new record for Malaysia.
“As the minister in charge of investment, if this investor is real, we will follow up and facilitate.
“We will roll out a red carpet to welcome this RM500bil investor, from the airport to the hotel,” he said.
