AHMEDABAD, March 9, 2026 (The Capital Post) — Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson capped a remarkable turnaround season by emerging as one of the key figures behind India national cricket team’s triumph at the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

The 31-year-old cricketer had endured a difficult period leading up to the tournament, facing criticism over inconsistent performances and questions about his place in the national side. However, Samson rediscovered his form during the competition and played a pivotal role in India’s successful title defence.

His resurgence began with a match-winning unbeaten 97 against the West Indies in a crucial Super Eight clash, helping India chase down a challenging total and stay on course in the tournament.

Samson followed that performance with another standout innings in the semi-final against England, scoring 89 runs to guide India into the final.

In the final against New Zealand national cricket team in Ahmedabad, India posted a formidable 255 runs before bowling out their opponents for 159 to win the title by 96 runs.

Samson’s consistent contributions throughout the tournament earned him the Player of the Tournament award after he amassed more than 300 runs across the competition.

The victory marked India’s third T20 World Cup title and made them the first team to successfully defend the championship.

Reflecting on his journey, Samson said the challenges he faced over the past year helped him improve both technically and mentally, ultimately preparing him for the biggest stage in world cricket.— The Capital Post
