KUCHING, 18 June 2026 (The Capital Post) – The Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR Sarawak) has marked a significant milestone after being selected to host the inaugural Malaysian Regional Geotechnical Engineering Conference 2026 (MRGEC2026).

The three-day conference, held from 17 to 19 June at The Imperial Hotel, Kuching, was officiated by Works Minister Dato’ Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

According to a Facebook post by Kementerian Kerja Raya Malaysia, the conference is a strategic collaboration between the Ministry of Works (KKR), JKR Malaysia, JKR Sarawak and JKR Sabah.

Held under the theme “Resilient Ground, Sustainable Future”, MRGEC2026 brings together more than 700 professionals, academics, researchers and industry players from Malaysia and abroad.

The event features 33 expert speakers and 45 industry exhibition booths, focusing on four key areas: innovation and site investigation, slope stability and landslides, building foundations, and ground improvement.

The ministry said the conference aims to provide a platform for knowledge-sharing on emerging technologies, innovative solutions and best practices to address geotechnical challenges in a sustainable and effective manner.

It also seeks to strengthen collaboration among government agencies, the private sector and academic institutions while advancing the competitiveness of Malaysia’s engineering industry on the global stage.

As part of the programme, participants will take part in a technical visit to the Sarawak River Bridge construction site in Sejingkat on 19 June to gain first-hand insights into the project’s construction methods, technical management and geotechnical solutions.

The ministry said the successful organisation of MRGEC2026 reflects JKR Sarawak’s capability in hosting large-scale technical events while reinforcing its commitment to engineering excellence, innovation and sustainable development. – The Capital Post
