Washington, D.C. 4 May 2026 (The Capital Post) – The U.S. Secret Service says its officers exchanged gunfire with an armed suspect near the White House after an encounter that triggered a brief security lockdown in the area.
Authorities said plainclothes agents first identified an individual behaving suspiciously near the perimeter of the White House complex. When uniformed officers approached, the suspect fled on foot and allegedly opened fire, prompting agents to return fire and strike the individual.
The suspect was taken to hospital for treatment. Officials have not yet released details on the person’s identity or condition, and investigations are ongoing.
A nearby area was temporarily secured, with some White House press staff briefly moved indoors as a precaution. Authorities stressed that the White House itself was not breached during the incident.
