The Umno deputy president said the decision was also in line with provisions in the Federal Constitution and recognition of the hard work and sacrifices of frontline workers who are doing their best to stem the spread of Covid-19.

“The King and the Malay rulers made the best decision for Malaysia by not issuing a proclamation of a state of emergency as proposed by the government, ” said Mohamad.

He added in a statement on Monday (Oct 26) that the decision was made in the best interests of the people and should encourage parties to come forward and work with the government to fight this global pandemic.

Mohamad said the wisdom shown by the King is a testament to the very important Constitutional role played by the monarchy in the country’s administration.

“The King and the Malay rulers have again given priority to the people and their wellbeing,” he said.

Mohamad expressed confidence that the Perikatan Nasional government would do whatever was necessary to execute the decision.

He added that the move to impose the emergency proposed by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin could have adversely affected the economy and put the nation as well as the rakyat in a more difficult situation.

Mohamad then said the Covid-19 crisis must be handled in a way which respected the Federal Constitution and allowed democracy to function normally.

He added that Malaysia was not facing a crippling economy or public security issues.

Mohamad then said that the government should remain focused on addressing the crisis in accordance with the Federal Constitution and to enhance initiatives to educate the rakyat based on science and data-driven approaches. – The Star
