KUALA LUMPUR, 3 March 2026 (The Capital Post) — A powerful earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale struck off the west coast of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia, on Tuesday afternoon, with tremors felt across parts of Peninsular Malaysia, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) confirmed.
According to MetMalaysia, the quake occurred at 12:56 pm (Malaysia time), with its epicentre located at approximately 2.0–2.7° North latitude and 95.9–96.5° East longitude, at a depth of around 10 km to 57 km beneath the sea — a shallow event by seismological standards that can transmit shaking over long distances.
Local residents across the northern and west coast states of Peninsular Malaysia reported feeling mild tremors shortly after the quake struck, though there were no immediate reports of damage or injury.

MetMalaysia emphasised that the seismic event poses no tsunami threat to Malaysia, and urged the public to stay informed through official channels for updates and advice.
Earthquakes of this magnitude off the Sunda Trench — the tectonic boundary between the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates — are not uncommon, and tremors are often felt across the region without causing major harm.-The Capital Post
