PUTRAJAYA 16 March 2026 (The Capital Post)- The Transport Ministry has proposed amendments to existing laws to impose stricter penalties on individuals involved in cable theft affecting the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the proposal has been submitted to the Home Ministry, stressing that cable theft should not be treated as a normal theft offence due to its potential impact on public safety and the reliability of the country’s public transport network.
He explained that stolen cables could disrupt operations and even lead to accidents within the public transport system, making the offence a serious threat to commuters and infrastructure.
Loke also revealed that discussions on strengthening legal action against cable theft had previously been held with Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail last December, with further action now expected from the Home Ministry.
