WASHINGTON 2 April 2026 (The Capital Post) – United States President Donald Trump told Americans that the conflict with Iran is approaching its final phase, as he attempted to justify the military campaign during a televised national address while his approval ratings continue to slide.

Speaking from the White House, Trump said the United States was moving closer to achieving its key objectives in the conflict, which began more than a month earlier following joint strikes with Israel. He stated that the campaign aimed to dismantle Iran’s military capabilities, halt its support for regional armed groups and prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

The president indicated that military operations could continue for another two to three weeks, describing the next phase as involving “extremely hard” strikes designed to conclude the campaign quickly. Trump claimed American forces had already delivered decisive battlefield successes during the early weeks of the conflict.

However, the war has sparked concern at home as fuel prices in the United States climbed above US$4 per gallon, contributing to economic anxiety and weakening consumer confidence. Recent surveys show Trump’s approval rating dropping below 40 percent, with opposition rising even among some members of his own political party.

The conflict has also intensified geopolitical tensions after Iran reportedly took control of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route through which about one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes. The disruption has contributed to volatility in global energy markets and raised fears of broader regional instability.

Trump also warned that if Iran refuses to negotiate, the United States could escalate attacks on critical infrastructure, while urging international partners that depend on oil shipments through the Gulf to play a larger role in securing the waterway.

Despite suggesting that the war could soon conclude, Iran has rejected claims that it is seeking a ceasefire, accusing Washington of making unrealistic demands in any potential negotiations.-The Capital Post
