PUTRAJAYA 2 April 2026 (The Capital Post) – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched an investigation into five individuals suspected of spreading false claims online about an alleged increase in petrol and diesel prices.
In a statement, the commission said the misleading information was circulated on the social media platform Threads and had the potential to create confusion and concern among consumers. Authorities confirmed that three of the individuals involved have already been summoned to provide statements as part of the ongoing probe.
According to MCMC, the content shared by the suspects was found to be inaccurate and misleading after receiving complaints from the public. Officials warned that such misinformation could trigger unnecessary panic, particularly when it involves essential commodities like fuel.
The commission also revealed that some of the viral content had been manipulated using the visual identity of Buletin TV3, prompting the broadcaster to issue a denial and clarify that the material did not originate from its official channels. A complaint regarding the misuse of its branding was also lodged with the authorities.
