PUTRAJAYA 14 April 2026 (The Capital Post) – The government has introduced a RM50 airfare discount for flights between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia, aimed at easing travel costs during the upcoming festive season.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the initiative will run from May 15 to June 14 and is expected to benefit around 100,000 passengers travelling during the Gawai and Kaamatan celebrations. The move is part of ongoing efforts to ensure air travel remains affordable during peak demand periods.

The discount will be applied to tickets purchased within the specified period on selected domestic routes linking the peninsula with Sabah and Sarawak. Authorities confirmed that the measure involves cooperation with major domestic airlines, including Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and Batik Air.

Officials said the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) will allocate around RM5 million to support the subsidy, which will cover the fare difference resulting from the discount. The government expects the initiative to help stabilise ticket prices during the festive travel rush.

The announcement follows broader efforts by the Transport Ministry to manage airfares during high-demand seasons, including previous fare control measures and subsidy programmes to prevent excessive price hikes. Authorities say these interventions are designed to support Malaysians who return to their hometowns during major holidays.

Loke added that more details regarding booking procedures and eligibility will be released by participating airlines in the coming days, as preparations are made ahead of the festive travel period.

The government reiterated its commitment to balancing affordability for passengers while ensuring the sustainability of the aviation sector during peak seasons. -The Capital Post
