PUTRAJAYA, 11 June 2026 (The Capital Post) – Geopolitical developments and their implications for Malaysia took centre stage at a public lecture organised by the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), bringing together international scholars, policymakers and academics for a discussion on evolving global power dynamics.
The lecture, titled “China-US Relations and Its Impact on Malaysia”, featured renowned scholar Prof. Li Cheng, Founding Director of the Centre on Contemporary China and the World (CCCW) at the University of Hong Kong.
According to a Facebook post by Kementerian Pendidikan Tinggi, Higher Education Minister YB Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir said intellectual discourse remains a critical foundation for understanding the complexities of relations between major global powers.
He stressed that Malaysia must continue to strengthen its strategic understanding of China-US relations to ensure the country’s foreign policy remains balanced, relevant and resilient amid shifting geopolitical realities.
Zambry also expressed appreciation for Prof. Li’s longstanding contributions in helping academic communities and policymakers better understand developments in China’s political landscape and leadership structures.
The minister emphasised that Malaysia’s approach to international affairs should be guided by knowledge, openness to diverse perspectives and the ability to assess geopolitical changes objectively.

During the lecture, Prof. Li discussed the evolution of relations between China and the United States, highlighting the growing importance of higher education institutions as bridges of understanding between civilisations in an increasingly complex and polarised world.
He noted that the CCCW serves as an international dialogue platform connecting scholars, academic institutions and policymakers in efforts to better understand transformations in the global order.
Also present at the event was KPT Secretary-General Datuk Ts. Dr. Haji Aminuddin Hassim, along with an academic delegation from the University of Hong Kong.
